Walkers Deli & Sausage Co is a protein manufacturer operating across three specialist sites, covering sausage and deli, cooked bacon and snacking, and deli, and supplying retail cooked meats, pâté and B2B ham to bakeries and foodservice customers.
Training management and audit compliance sit at the centre of how the business runs in such a highly regulated industry and is overseen by a small compliance team supported by site-wide training coordination.
Before Nvolve, training records were split across paper files, Excel sheets and individual folders, with no single source of truth. Susan Rago, Training Process Auditor, described the old process:
Before Nvolve, records were stored in multiple places and we were often scrambling before an audit. I would honestly struggle to do things now the same as we did before we had the system.
Susan Rago, Training Process Auditor at Walkers Deli & Sausage Co
Compliance and training auditors had to search for evidence during audits, and there was a real risk that records could go missing or fall out of date without anyone noticing.
Consolidation was the priority when the team selected a system, bringing training records, refresher cycles and SOP sign-offs into one place, accessible to the whole team even when someone was away. The rollout brought a learning curve, as Susan explained:
"Initially... it was a bit of a learning process... we had to keep on asking for support," though the team has "gone a long way" since those early days."
Key Benefits brought by Nvolve
-
Audit confidence and readiness, with the compliance team no longer scrambling before an audit. Susan described the shift from feeling like "a headless chicken running around" to a place where "let the audit come, let the audit go, it doesn't matter." The Top 3 things Walker's Deli are experiencing significant benefit and value from are:
- Accountability, with a newly introduced three-way signature process extending sign-off responsibility to team leaders and managers directly, rather than resting solely with the compliance team.
- Planning and forecasting, with visibility into upcoming one-month and three-month training expiries letting the team plan proactively. "Planning is something that has really helped us... I really can plan my weeks, and my month, based on the reports."
The team can now pull exact figures and percentages on demand rather than compiling them manually, and reports are checked constantly, with Susan estimating she checks the platform roughly every two hours while the rest of the team pulls at least one report every working day.
Team leaders and managers now have their own visibility into learning plans, supporting production planning alongside compliance, while still finding it "quite easy to operate" as explained by Kasha, another Training Process Auditor for Walkers.
